The UNICEF has announced the launch of a major campaign to distribute 1.2 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets across North Darfur, aiming to protect children and families from malaria and reach hard-to-access areas.
In the same context, Sudan’s Minister of Health, Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, warned that malaria has become a widespread epidemic threat affecting a large segment of the population.
He noted that Sudan records more than 3 million malaria cases annually, accompanied by a high mortality rate. The ongoing war has further worsened the country’s health situation, contributing to the spread of the disease and complicating control efforts due to the destruction of health infrastructure and mass displacement.
According to the minister, Sudan has the highest malaria burden in the Eastern Mediterranean region, accounting for over 3 million cases each year and approximately 46% of all malaria cases in the region, with significantly high fatality rates.
