The Sudanese University Professors Committee (LAJSU) announced on Wednesday the temporary suspension of its strike for two months, in order to allow ongoing efforts and negotiations with the relevant authorities regarding professors’ demands for improved service conditions and a revised salary structure.
Thousands of university professors had been engaged in a comprehensive strike since late March across more than 30 public universities, protesting deteriorating employment conditions and low salaries. The strike lasted for nearly three months.
In a press statement, the committee said it had conducted a poll among professors from 34 public universities through LAJSU groups, asking them to choose between continuing the strike or suspending it temporarily. Professors expressed their views with a high sense of awareness and responsibility.
According to the committee, the poll results showed that 70.47 percent of participants voted in favor of suspending the strike, while 29.53 percent supported its continuation.
Based on these results, the committee decided to suspend the strike from June 29, 2026, until August 29, 2026, to provide an opportunity for ongoing efforts and initiatives proposed by various institutions and prominent figures aimed at resolving the issue through the approval of new service regulations and a revised salary structure for faculty members at public universities.
