Displaced people in North Kordofan State are living in catastrophic humanitarian conditions amid food shortages, depleted financial savings, and the spread of diseases in several displacement camps.
In this context, Halima Omar, a resident of Khortaqat Camp, told Mashawir that “the living conditions of displaced people in the camps are extremely poor. Government support and assistance from local organizations have also been suspended for 45 days. Most of what reaches the camps comes through community efforts or charitable donors, and consists of modest supplies that do not meet daily needs, given the overcrowding in the camps, particularly with the arrival of displaced people from West and South Kordofan states.”
She added that “women are suffering severely, and cases of death have been recorded among women due to malnutrition, poisoning, and cholera, in addition to complications during childbirth and recurrent miscarriages.”
She explained that “the situation of pregnant women in the displacement camps is extremely difficult due to the lack of sufficient food for both mothers and their unborn children.”
Meanwhile, Hassan Saeed, supervisor of takayas and free kitchens serving displaced people in gathering areas across El Obeid, complained about the difficulty of securing food supplies and provisions needed to prepare free meals. He attributed this to continuously rising prices and declining donations and support from charitable individuals, warning that this could force a number of kitchens and takayas to suspend their services, particularly amid the daily influx of displaced people from West and South Kordofan states.
Saeed told Mashawir that “the situation of displaced people is deteriorating dramatically, particularly following the suspension of humanitarian support and assistance.”
