Displaced People in El Obeid: Growing Needs and Limited Response

El Obeid – Mashawir

Official statistics indicate that the number of internally displaced people (IDPs) in North Kordofan State is estimated at around 1.5 million, with approximately 95 percent living outside formal displacement camps. Meanwhile, the city of El Obeid continues to receive newly displaced people on a daily basis, amid expanding humanitarian needs.

Statistics issued by the Humanitarian Aid Commission in North Kordofan State indicated growing needs in the areas of food, water, health, and education, alongside reported cases of malnutrition, infections, and cholera. This has prompted humanitarian partners to implement interventions to address the increasing health and humanitarian needs.

Zaher Al-Hamri, a community activist in North Kordofan State, told Mashawir that “the continued influx of displaced people is placing additional pressure on basic services in El Obeid and host communities.”

He noted that “displaced families living outside the camps face difficulties accessing food, water, healthcare, and education, amid limited available resources.”

Al-Hamri added that “the growing number of displaced people living outside the camps makes it more difficult to assess needs and reach the most vulnerable families.”

He called for stronger coordination among humanitarian organizations and local communities and for an expansion of interventions, particularly in water, health, food, and child protection.

Meanwhile, Salwa Mahmoud, a displaced woman, told Mashawir that “the situation of displaced families is becoming increasingly difficult as their daily needs continue to grow.”

She explained that “access to water, food, and healthcare remains a constant challenge for many families, particularly those without stable sources of income.”

Salwa noted that “the continued arrival of newly displaced people is increasing pressure on families and communities hosting them.”

She stressed the need for “continued and expanded humanitarian assistance to include displaced people living outside the camps, alongside support for basic services in host communities.”
