The United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan has warned that the expansion of drone attacks, alongside escalating repression and restrictions on civil liberties, is exposing civilians to growing risks as the war continues to spread.
The mission cautioned that the erosion of civil liberties not only threatens individuals but also undermines civilian protection, obstructs the documentation of violations and accountability for perpetrators, and weakens prospects for genuine and inclusive Sudanese dialogue to end the conflict.
The mission concluded that “no credible Sudanese dialogue can take place under these circumstances.”
It further found that the pattern of drone attacks it documented violates the principles of distinction, proportionality, and the obligation to take all feasible precautions to protect civilians, and may amount to war crimes.
