World Food Programme: Sudan Faces Critical Situation as Acute Hunger Intensifies

Khartoum – Mashawir

The newly appointed Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), Lou Lindberg, has announced plans to visit Sudan in the coming weeks amid what he described as an extremely critical situation regarding acute hunger.

He reaffirmed the programme’s commitment to continuing its efforts to alleviate the humanitarian suffering in Sudan, South Sudan and Somalia.

In his first press briefing since assuming office, Lindberg stressed that his team would continue exploring ways to deliver assistance and ease the suffering of affected populations.

He noted that “the World Food Programme will not stand idly by in the face of the challenges confronting it. It will work to overcome all obstacles to reach conflict-affected areas, including through airdropping humanitarian assistance to remote and hard-to-reach locations.”

He emphasised that “the next phase requires a strong focus on implementation by empowering and protecting programme staff, strengthening partnerships with donors to secure the funding needed for humanitarian projects, and continuously improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the response.”
