The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a continued increase in reported cholera cases in the Darfur region, with an alarming fatality rate.
It noted that more than 3,000 people have died across Sudan from cholera over the past 14 months of war.
The organization added that bacterial infections caused by contaminated food or water have spread to all states of the country.
Hala Khodari, WHO’s Deputy Representative in Sudan, stated that the organization has launched a vaccination campaign targeting 406,000 people in North Darfur State.
Speaking at a press conference in Geneva via video link from Port Sudan, she added that reported cases in Darfur are rising amid severe access restrictions that hinder the response.
She continued that, as of last Sunday, about 12,739 cases and 358 deaths had been reported in more than half of Darfur’s localities. Nationwide, over 113,600 cases and more than 3,000 deaths have been recorded, with a fatality rate of 2.7%—well above the target threshold of 1%.
