United Nations: Number of civilian deaths in the Sudan war doubled in 2025

Khartoum - Mashaweer

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, announced today (Thursday) that the number of civilian deaths in the Sudan war in 2025 reached more than twice what it was previously; 11,300 people died, in addition to the missing and unidentified bodies.

Türk said in Geneva that the year 2025 saw an increase of more than two and a half times in the number of civilians killed compared to the previous year, without counting the missing and unidentified bodies.

Sudan’s health system faced an unprecedented collapse due to the war that broke out in mid-April 2023. Most hospitals in the capital, Khartoum, and other cities in several states turned into military barracks. The country also experienced a sharp shortage of medical services, which led to a widespread outbreak of epidemics and the spread of disease and malnutrition.

The Sudanese Minister of Health, Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, confirmed that the scale of losses in the health sector is very large, as destruction has affected all states of Sudan. This included the sabotage of hospitals and health institutions, the looting of medicines and vehicles, and the direct targeting of health workers.
