UN official in Sudan, Denise Brown, stated that “this country, facing the largest humanitarian crisis in the world, has been left alone as the war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces enters its fourth year.”
In an interview with Agence France-Presse from her office in Khartoum, Brown said, “It should not be said that this crisis is forgotten, but rather it has been abandoned.”
She added, “I feel deeply angry. My question is: what is the world waiting for to wake up and make a real effort, as we have seen in other horrific crises around the world?”
The seasoned official listed the violations documented by the UN, ranging from systematic sexual violence to the killing of 6,000 people within three days when the Rapid Support Forces took control of the city of El Fasher last year. She also highlighted indicators of genocide detected by UN investigations and the ongoing sieges causing famine across the country.
