Several international organizations held a community dialogue session at the Abu Al-Naja displacement camp in Gedaref State, focusing on the risks posed by landmines and explosive remnants of war, peaceful coexistence, and strengthening the resilience of communities affected by conflict.
The session was implemented in cooperation with the Youth Empowerment Fund, funded through the European Union’s international partnerships, and supported and monitored by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, as part of cooperation with the major youth organizations’ alliance.
Salem Al-Amin, a member of the Sudanese Red Crescent Society, told Mashaweer that “the session targeted 25 young women and provided them with a safe space for dialogue and exchanging views on the dangers of landmines, unexploded ordnance and explosive remnants of war, as well as their impact on people’s lives, the environment, health and livelihoods. It also addressed the requirements for a safe return to affected areas.”
He added that “the session also focused on promoting a culture of peace and peaceful coexistence, encouraging dialogue among community members and respecting differing viewpoints, contributing to building safer and more cohesive communities.”
Meanwhile, youth empowerment activist Salwa Qamar Al-Din told Mashaweer that “the session contributed to strengthening social cohesion and promoting a culture of peace and peaceful coexistence. It also provided young women with an opportunity to actively participate in community dialogue and peacebuilding efforts.”
She added that “one of the participants was able to apply the knowledge and skills she acquired during the training in practical community work by leading a dialogue within a conflict-affected community. This demonstrates the importance of empowering young people and transforming training into impactful initiatives on the ground.”
