“UNICEF: Resumption of measles vaccination campaigns in South Darfur”

South Darfur – Mashawir

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced that it has resumed vaccination campaigns against measles and rubella in 15 localities in South Darfur State.

It noted that the organization and its partners aim to reach more than 1.4 million children aged between 9 months and 14 years.

UNICEF explained that the campaign will expand to North and East Darfur in the coming weeks.

A decline in child immunization rates in Sudan poses a serious threat to millions of children, as vaccination coverage has dropped to its lowest level in 40 years, according to UNICEF and World Health Organization.

According to the two organizations, Sudan now records the lowest global coverage for the pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine. In addition, coverage of the triple vaccine (DTP) has declined from 94% in 2022 to 48% last year—marking the lowest level in Sudan since 1987.
