Doctors without boarders: Vaccines Reach Children in Jebel Marra on the Backs of Camels and Donkeys
Central Darfur – Mashawir
said that between April 1 and 6, its teams, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, vaccinated about 56,000 children in South Jebel Marra, Central Darfur.
The organization added that earlier this year, a measles outbreak spread in the area after routine immunization was disrupted due to conflict, displacement, difficult access, and shortages of vaccines. This left many communities without immunization services or significantly limited their access.
It explained that, in the absence of roads in these remote areas, vaccines were transported by camels, while teams traveled on donkeys across rugged mountainous terrain to reach villages. The teams moved from one village to another to ensure that no child was left behind.
It noted that the campaign achieved 97 percent of its target, helping to halt the spread of measles in one of the most isolated regions of Sudan.
