Sudan: Decision to Close Overseas Campuses of Sudanese Universities Is Final

Khartoum – Mashawir

Ahmed Madawi Musa, Sudan’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, announced that the government has taken a decision to permanently close the centers established by Sudanese universities abroad following the outbreak of war more than three years ago, stressing that the decision is final and will not be reversed.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Musa explained that seven public universities in the regions of Darfur and Kordofan have been relocated to safer states, allowing most students to return to their studies.

He added that 10 public universities in Khartoum State—out of a total of 35 public universities across the country—suffered extensive damage due to actions by the Rapid Support Forces. However, limited repairs have enabled them to resume academic activities despite severe financial constraints.

The minister also revealed plans to introduce reforms in the private education sector, which includes 129 universities and colleges, among them more than 80 universities.

He noted that one of the options under consideration is merging some institutions in order to improve the overall quality of education.
