The United Nations said that as millions of Sudanese return to their areas of origin, the risk of exposure to explosive remnants of war is increasing.
It reported that 77 casualties were recorded within just three months, including 35 children.
The UN explained that the United Nations Mine Action Service and its partners are working to scale up the response, but emphasized that more support and cooperation are needed.
For his part, Moataz Abdelqio, an official at the United Nations Mine Action Service in Sudan, stated that clearing war remnants and unexploded ordnance is both costly and time-consuming. He added that survey and verification procedures require long periods, during which tragic incidents may occur—especially as residents return in large numbers to neighborhoods across Khartoum.
