The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in collaboration with international partners, has announced the launch of a new education initiative aimed at returning 328,000 conflict-affected children to classrooms across Sudan.
Despite the reopening of schools in Sudan, the education sector continues to face a major crisis, with millions of students still out of school due to deteriorating health and security conditions.
Sudanese families are grappling with multiple challenges, including financial barriers such as school fees, preparation costs, and rising transportation expenses, amid an economic downturn that has led to households losing around 60% of their income.
According to the latest statistics released by United Nations Children’s Fund, approximately 17 million Sudanese children have been out of school for more than two years due to war and instability, in what the organization has described as “a generation at risk.”
The agency further noted that around 90% of school-age children—nearly 19 million—are currently missing out on formal education.
