The United Nations Warns of Regional Repercussions of the Sudan War

Washington – Mashawir

The UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Huang Xia, confirmed that “the ongoing war in Sudan continues to affect the nature of relations between Sudan and South Sudan, along with the resulting humanitarian, security, and political repercussions across the region.”

He added that “South Sudan is among the neighboring countries most affected by the conflict, given the geographic, historical, economic, and political ties linking the two nations.”

The UN official made the remarks during his regular briefing to the UN Security Council in New York on the implementation of Resolution 2046, adopted unanimously by the Council in 2012.

He called for an immediate cessation of hostilities between Sudan and South Sudan and urged the development of a roadmap to resolve outstanding issues, including border demarcation, oil revenue sharing, and determining the final status of the Abyei region.

Huang stressed that “since the outbreak of war in Sudan in 2023, more than 1.3 million Sudanese refugees and returnees have fled to South Sudan, worsening an already deteriorating humanitarian situation and increasing pressure on limited resources, particularly in food, healthcare, and education services.”
