UN Warns of Losses Reaching 40% of Sudan’s Upcoming Agricultural Season Crops
Khartoum – Mashawir
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has warned that losses could reach up to 40 percent of crops during Sudan’s upcoming agricultural season unless immediate and large-scale intervention takes place.
FAO Representative in Sudan, Hongjie Yang, said in a post on the X platform that the upcoming farming season faces serious risks, including expectations of reduced rainfall and damage to irrigation systems caused by the conflict.
Yang noted that the risks also include a sharp rise in farming costs, with fertilizer prices increasing by 167 percent and fuel prices by 220 percent.
The conflict has caused widespread damage to irrigation systems in irrigated agricultural projects, including the Gezira Scheme, Rahad Agricultural Project, and Suki Agricultural Project.
Meanwhile, bank financing has declined in northern, central, and eastern Sudan, while it has completely stopped in Darfur and parts of Kordofan due to the destruction of bank branches.
