Strengthening Youth Skills in Content Production and Countering Hate Speech in Sudan

The Youth Network for Countering Hate Speech concluded a community workshop in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, aimed at strengthening the capacities of its members in media content production, enhancing their conceptual understanding of hate speech, and equipping them with practical strategies to counter it. The workshop formed part of the network’s broader efforts to empower young people and promote a culture of peace.

The event was held as part of a series of civic education programs designed to combat hate speech, promote the values of citizenship, and strengthen youth participation as key partners in building Sudanese society.

The workshop sessions focused on civic education, citizens’ rights and responsibilities, media literacy, and developing critical awareness of content shared on social media platforms. Participants were trained to verify information, distinguish factual news from misinformation and rumors, and engage with media responsibly.

Shihab Salman, a member of the network, told Mashaweer that the workshop is part of an ongoing initiative to build young people’s capacities in media and civic education, enabling them to produce professional content that helps counter hate speech while promoting dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence.

He emphasized that empowering young people is a fundamental pillar in building a more cohesive and peaceful society.

Meanwhile, Mu’aza Al-Sharif, one of the workshop participants, told Mashaweer that the program gave participants a deeper understanding of the dangers of hate speech and effective ways to address it. She added that it also enhanced their ability to engage with digital content in a more informed, responsible, and critical manner.
