United Nations: Women in Displacement Camps Face Harassment and Sexual Violence

Blue Nile – Mashawir

The United Nations Population Fund has reported that women and girls in displacement camps in Blue Nile State are facing increasing levels of harassment and sexual violence due to unsafe living conditions and weak protection systems.

In its April 2026 report, the agency stated that women and girls in high-risk displacement sites are also exposed to exploitation and harmful coping mechanisms as a result of overcrowding, inadequate lighting, and limited access to healthcare and protection services.

The report noted that approximately 33.7 million Sudanese people require humanitarian assistance, including 8.1 million women of reproductive age and 805,000 pregnant women. UNFPA aims to reach one million women and girls with reproductive health services and 1.9 million people through gender-based violence prevention and response programs.

According to the report, about 8.8 million people remain internally displaced across Sudan’s 18 states, while more than 4.2 million people have returned to their areas of origin, the majority of them women and children.

The agency further highlighted that escalating fighting in Blue Nile State has triggered new waves of displacement. Meanwhile, conditions in South Kordofan remain highly fragile, with reported cases of harassment, child marriage, domestic violence, and the detention of women and girls at checkpoints.
