Humanitarian Support for Displaced People and War-Affected Communities in Gedaref

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), in partnership with the Sudanvar Organization, has launched a humanitarian project to provide essential non-food items (NFIs) to war-affected people and displaced families in Basunda locality, Gedaref State. The project is funded by the Sudan Humanitarian Fund and implemented in coordination with the Gedaref State authorities and the Basunda locality administration.

The project targets 2,000 beneficiaries in seven villages across the locality: Kinaina Al-Bair, Kinaina Al-Tabaldiya, Wad Abu Tahir, Al-Qallabat, Khor Shatta, Atarb and Karnikila. The distribution was launched in Kinaina Al-Bair village, where 500 people are among the project’s targeted beneficiaries.

Speaking to Mashawir, Gedaref-based volunteer activist Yehia Mohamed Omar said: “Providing non-food items represents an important intervention for war-affected families and displaced people, particularly as basic needs continue to grow while many families’ ability to meet their daily requirements has declined.”

He added that “expanding these interventions to include villages and areas affected by displacement can help ease the burden on beneficiary families.”

He called for “continued humanitarian support and strengthened responses to growing needs.”

For his part, displaced resident Abdelnabi Musa told Mashawir that “displaced and war-affected families need this kind of assistance to cope with their difficult living conditions.”

He noted that “providing essential supplies helps ease some of the burdens facing families that have lost their sources of income or been forced to leave their homes because of the war.”

Musa stressed the importance of “continuing assistance and ensuring that it reaches as many affected families as possible, particularly in areas hosting large numbers of displaced people and facing increasing pressure on their resources and services.”
