Emergency Lawyers Call for Investigation into Attack on Villages in North Kordofan

North Kordofan - Mashaeer

The organization Emergency Lawyers has condemned the introduction of military operations into populated areas, stating in a statement that such actions pose a direct threat to civilians’ lives and increase the likelihood of serious violations.

The group added that exposing local communities to armed violence seriously undermines the protection standards established under international humanitarian law.

The statement called for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack on villages in North Kordofan and the violations that accompanied it, urging that those responsible be held accountable and that urgent measures be taken to protect civilians in conflict-affected areas across Sudan.

In recent months, North Kordofan has witnessed escalating security tensions across several fronts, amid ongoing military confrontations between the warring parties. Control of Bara, the second-largest city in the state, has changed hands between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The city is currently under RSF control, while the group continues to operate in several localities and towns across the Kordofan region. Meanwhile, the army maintains firm control over El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State.
