The General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugees in the Darfur region announced on Monday a rise in cases of Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) and child malnutrition in the Jebel Marra areas of North Darfur State, warning of a worsening health and humanitarian situation.
Adam Rijal, spokesperson for the Coordination, stated that the number of Mpox cases has reached 350 infections since the disease first appeared on May 16, affecting areas in eastern Jebel Marra, including Jao, Soni, and Darban.
He expressed concern that the outbreak could spread to additional areas if urgent measures are not taken to contain the health crisis.
Rijal also warned of the possibility of severe food shortages in the near future due to declining humanitarian assistance, the continued deterioration of the country’s economic conditions, food scarcity, and rising prices of essential commodities.
He stressed that the combination of disease outbreaks and worsening food insecurity poses a serious threat to vulnerable communities, particularly children, and called for urgent humanitarian and health interventions to prevent further deterioration of conditions in the region.
