Calls for International Intervention to Secure the Release of More Than 20,000 Detainees Held by the Rapid Support Forces
Port Sudan – Mashawir
The Sudanese government has urged the United Nations to intervene to secure the release of more than 20,000 detainees allegedly being held by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in prisons located in South and North Darfur states.
Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Al-Harith Idris, sent a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the UN Security Council, Leonor Zalabata Torres, addressing the situation at Daqris Prison in Nyala. He requested that the letter be circulated as an official Security Council document and distributed to member states.
In the letter, Al-Harith Idris stated that the RSF is currently holding 19,800 detainees and prisoners at Daqris Prison, including 5,434 civilians from various professions and 690 women.
He added that the detainees include 3,795 members of the Sudanese Armed Forces, 4,270 police officers, 544 personnel from the General Intelligence Service, 73 medical workers, and approximately 5,000 civilians who were transferred from El Fasher in North Darfur State.
The Sudanese envoy called on the United Nations, its human rights mechanisms, the UN Security Council, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and other international bodies to demand the immediate release of all civilians allegedly being arbitrarily detained by the Rapid Support Forces.
