The Sudan Doctors Network revealed on Wednesday that more than 215 civilian detainees have died in Dagris Prison, which is controlled by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in South Darfur State, western Sudan, within less than two months. The fate of 31 detainees, including children, remains unknown.
In a statement, the network said that information received from field sources indicates that the death toll among victims of arbitrary civilian detention in Dagris Prison has risen to more than 215 people during May and June.
The network explained that the deaths resulted from the spread of diseases and epidemics, as well as torture and ill-treatment, amid detention conditions lacking even the most basic standards of healthcare and humanitarian support.
It added that it is following with deep concern the deteriorating humanitarian conditions inside Dagris Prison. According to the statement, 31 detainees, including minors, were transferred to Nyala Hospital, the main medical facility in South Darfur State, more than two weeks ago despite reportedly showing no serious illnesses. Their whereabouts remain unknown, raising growing concerns about their safety and well-being.
