Thirst Grips El Obeid as Contaminated Water Raises Fears of Humanitarian Disaster

El Obeid – Mashawir

The humanitarian situation in El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, continues to deteriorate after an airstrike destroyed the city’s main power station, triggering a severe water crisis and causing a dramatic rise in fuel and food prices, while the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continue to tighten their siege on the city.

Thousands of residents are facing an acute shortage of safe drinking water and severe restrictions on movement due to prolonged power outages, attacks on fuel stations, and the disruption of supply routes from surrounding areas.

Residents now rely entirely on purchasing groundwater delivered by water tankers after the city’s main water network has remained out of service for more than a week.

Videos circulating on social media show desperate crowds scrambling to obtain small amounts of clean drinking water.

The North Kordofan State Humanitarian Aid Commission has pledged to urgently deploy 150 water tankers, each with a capacity of approximately 15,000 litres, with the first phase targeting the neighborhoods most affected and densely populated.

Additional videos have shown residents transporting water using rudimentary means, highlighting a rapidly worsening humanitarian crisis and raising fears of an impending disaster.
