A coalition of 41 Sudanese trade union and human rights organizations on Monday called for an immediate ceasefire across Sudan to prevent El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, from facing the same fate as El Fasher. The groups also urged the international community to take preventive action.
In a joint statement, Emergency Lawyers, the Sudanese Journalists Syndicate, and 39 other organizations said that the current situation in El Obeid constitutes an early warning and that the city and its residents can still be spared catastrophe if the parties to the conflict agree to an immediate humanitarian ceasefire throughout the country.
The statement warned that continued military escalation in El Obeid could result in a repetition of the violations witnessed in several parts of Sudan, most recently in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State.
The signatories called on the United Nations Security Council, regional organizations, and the international community to intensify political and diplomatic pressure to secure a humanitarian ceasefire. They also urged support for an independent and effective monitoring mechanism to oversee its implementation, alongside urgent preventive measures to avert further serious violations associated with the ongoing conflict.
