A memorandum on the worsening risk of famine in Al-Malha locality in North Darfur State, jointly prepared by the Sudanese Human Rights Observatory and the Baza Organization for Development, Humanitarian Services and Peacebuilding, was released on Saturday.
The memorandum revealed strong indications that the area is entering a serious food crisis that requires immediate intervention by all relevant local, national, and international actors.
According to local sources, community-based solidarity mechanisms—including emergency response rooms, local non-governmental organizations, and grassroots mutual aid initiatives, which constitute the only functioning safety net on the ground—have become severely overstretched.
These local initiatives established community kitchens to help alleviate hunger among displaced families. However, the prolonged crisis and the severe shortage of resources have exhausted their capacity to continue operating. Local sources stated that the initiatives have received only small financial grants to support community kitchens operating in more than 35 active displacement sites.
