UNICEF: 48 Children Killed or Injured in Kordofan Amid Escalating Fighting

Kordofan – Mashaweer

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced on Tuesday that 48 children have been killed or injured in recent weeks in North Kordofan State, western Sudan.

In a statement, UNICEF said that reports indicate at least 23 children have been killed and 25 others injured in North Kordofan over the past two months, following the escalation of fighting around the city of El Obeid in late May.

The agency noted that the latest deadly attack occurred last Friday in the Barbar area, south of El Obeid, where four children were killed, bringing the total number of children killed or injured in July alone to at least eight.

UNICEF added that this incident followed earlier attacks in which at least 10 children were killed or injured in May and at least 30 children in June, including an infant who was only two months old.
