Some hospitals in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, have begun gradually resuming operations after months of destruction caused by the war, while rehabilitation efforts continue to restore essential healthcare services for residents and people returning to the city.
One of the most symbolic locations is “Emergency Street” (Shari’ Al-Hawadith), which for decades served as the capital’s main hub for emergency care and life-saving medical treatment. Today, it stands as a stark reminder of the devastation inflicted on Sudan’s healthcare sector. Buildings that were once crowded with patients and medical staff now lie silent after the war forced their closure and caused extensive damage to facilities and medical equipment.
Speaking to Al Jazeera correspondent Al-Tahir Al-Mardi in Khartoum, an official in the emergency department of one hospital said the facility suffered a major fire that destroyed medical equipment and critical infrastructure. He estimated the losses at approximately US$2 million, adding that the hospital is awaiting the restoration of electricity before completing final preparations and fully resuming operations.
Sudan’s Ministry of Health says rehabilitation efforts remain ongoing, with priority being given to reopening healthcare facilities and restoring essential medical services.
Sudanese Minister of Health Haitham Ibrahim stated that more than 85 percent of healthcare institutions in Khartoum State have resumed operations, including more than 40 hospitals and around 203 health centers, as authorities prepare to receive citizens returning from different parts of Sudan.
