Sudanese Pound Declines Against Foreign Currencies, Worsening Humanitarian Conditions

The Sudanese pound has continued to weaken against foreign currencies, surpassing the SDG 6,000 per US dollar mark in the parallel market, as authorities implemented a new increase in the customs exchange rate.
According to foreign exchange traders, the US dollar was traded on Tuesday at SDG 6,100 for selling, compared with around SDG 5,900 in recent days.
Traders attributed the depreciation of the Sudanese pound to rising demand for foreign currencies amid a shortage of supply, in addition to sustained demand from a wide range of importers, which has intensified pressure on the local currency.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese authorities announced a new increase in the customs exchange rate, raising it from SDG 3,740 to SDG 3,960 per US dollar, representing an increase of 5.6 percent.
