Local residents in several cities, villages, and towns across the Darfur and Kordofan regions have reported a sharp increase in the prices of staple grains, particularly millet and sorghum, as well as their disappearance from local markets. They warned that the continuation of the crisis could lead to famine in the two regions.
Local sources in North Darfur warned that the ongoing shortage of essential commodities and the unprecedented rise in prices, driven by fighting in Kordofan, the closure of the route through Al-Dabba in Northern State, and the closure of the border triangle to goods coming from Libya, could trigger an imminent famine that would be difficult to control and contain its consequences.
The sources said residents in southeastern El Fasher are facing severe food shortages following the sharp increase in grain prices and their disappearance from markets.
They appealed to humanitarian organizations to intervene urgently to save local residents, amid the absence of humanitarian assistance, the declining role of emergency response rooms and charitable kitchens, and delays in the agricultural season due to insufficient rainfall.
