Two people were killed and others injured during violent incidents at the Kalma displacement camp in South Darfur State. The violence followed the killing of a young man, while the camp administration office and the displaced persons’ coordination office were set on fire.
The General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees said the “incidents began as a criminal dispute between two young men from within the camp, before tensions later escalated inside the camp as a result of what it described as incitement by some parties.”
The violence triggered fear and concern among displaced residents at a time when the camp is already facing extremely fragile humanitarian and security conditions, raising fears that the violence could spread and further threaten civilians’ lives.
Abdel Salam Daldoum, a displaced resident of Kalma camp, told Mashawir that the “incidents have created a climate of fear and anxiety among residents,” calling for the tensions to be contained, civilians to be protected, and similar incidents to be prevented from recurring inside the camp.
Meanwhile, community activist in the camp Nour al-Din Bahr told Mashawir that the escalation, resulting in deaths and injuries and the burning of service and administrative facilities, “represents a dangerous development.” He stressed the importance of calming the situation and safeguarding the security and property of displaced people.
Bahr called for “dealing with the incident in a way that prevents the circle of violence from expanding and creates conditions that allow displaced people to go about their lives safely, away from tension and incitement.”
