The international Quintet on Sudan has renewed its rejection of a military solution to the war and called from Khartoum for a credible and inclusive political process leading to a civilian-led democratic government. The position came as Director-General of Sudan’s General Intelligence Service, Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal, stressed the importance of dialogue with Chad and Ethiopia, despite accusing both countries of playing roles linked to the conflict.
Chairman of the Sovereign Council and Army Commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan held talks with a delegation from the Quintet, focusing on peace efforts and the political process. The Quintet comprises the United Nations, African Union, European Union, Arab League, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
Mohamed Ibn Chambas, spokesperson for the Quintet delegation visiting Khartoum, said the talks had been constructive.
He explained that the delegation’s visit to Khartoum aims to build bridges between the Quintet’s efforts outside Sudan and Sudanese initiatives inside the country.
He added that the Quintet believes joint efforts could help advance a credible and inclusive political process leading to a transition toward a civilian-led democratic government that reflects the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
Ibn Chambas stressed that “there is no military solution to the conflict in Sudan,” calling for any sustainable political process to be accompanied by concrete steps to protect civilians and end hostilities.
He also reaffirmed the Quintet’s respect for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, as well as its rejection of the establishment of “parallel structures.”
