Call for Humanitarian Intervention to Support Sudanese Refugees in Chad

The Emergency Room of the Karyai Camp for Sudanese refugees in Chad has called for urgent and coordinated humanitarian intervention by humanitarian organizations and partners, with priority given to newly arrived refugees and families with no sources of income.

The Emergency Room called for strengthening the response in the areas of food security and water, while also supporting livelihoods, with the aim of easing the burden on families and strengthening their ability to cope with difficult economic conditions.

Speaking to Mashawir, Suleiman Al-Douma, a member of the Emergency Room, said: “The combination of a lack of income sources, rising food prices, shortages of some essential commodities, and water scarcity has increased the vulnerability of the humanitarian situation inside the camp.”

Al-Douma explained that “the urgent provision of food baskets and drinking water, along with support for the most vulnerable families and the implementation of livelihood programmes, is an urgent priority to prevent further deterioration of humanitarian conditions and improve families’ ability to meet their daily needs.”

For his part, displaced resident Al-Tijani Hammad told Mashawir that “families in the camp are facing increasing livelihood burdens amid difficulties in securing food and water and the absence of stable sources of income.”

He noted that “newly arrived families are in greater need of assistance because of their limited resources and capabilities.”

Hammad called for “the continuation of humanitarian assistance and for it to be directed more effectively toward the families most in need, alongside providing opportunities and livelihood projects that can help families become more self-reliant and improve their living conditions.”
