Mysterious Illnesses Affect Displaced Children in Darfur

Mysterious illnesses reported among a number of children in the Abd Al-Shakur area of Kutum locality, North Darfur State, have sparked panic and concern among displaced people, local residents and host communities, amid the absence of a medical diagnosis identifying the nature and causes of the condition.

The Abd Al-Shakur Emergency Room said that “symptoms have begun appearing on the bodies of a number of children in the area and in the three displacement camps.”

It noted that “parents and guardians of affected children reported the appearance of bruises, rashes and wounds on their bodies, raising concerns that the condition could spread from one child to another.”

The emergency room explained that “the lack of a clear diagnosis has increased confusion and fear among families, particularly as a number of children have been affected, amid weak healthcare services in the area.”

Speaking to Mashawir, Salah Adam Abdullah, a member of the Abd Al-Shakur Emergency Room, said: “The situation requires urgent intervention by local, regional and international health authorities and humanitarian organizations to determine the nature of these cases, diagnose them and provide appropriate treatment.”

Abdullah pointed out that “the widespread presence of flies, coupled with weakened immunity associated with malnutrition and the lack of adequate healthcare, may increase health risks.” He warned that the situation could worsen if intervention is delayed.

For his part, Dr. Ridwan Imam, a physician based in North Darfur State, told Mashawir that “the appearance of bruises, rashes or skin wounds in children alone is not sufficient to determine the nature of the illness or conclude that it is contagious.”

He stressed the need for direct medical examinations of the affected children, as well as determining accompanying symptoms and when they first appeared.

Imam explained that “early diagnosis is an essential step in identifying the cause of the cases and determining the appropriate treatment.”

He urged families to seek medical care when unusual symptoms appear in children and to avoid using medications or remedies randomly before the underlying cause is identified.
