El Obeid – Mashawir
The second day of protection and psychosocial support sessions has concluded as part of the International Day of Peace Week activities at the Peace Studies Centre at the University of Kordofan, with the participation of people interested in peace, protection, and community support issues.
The sessions addressed coping mechanisms for crises and pressures resulting from conflicts, as well as ways to provide initial support to those affected. They also included awareness-raising activities focusing on the importance of social protection and its role in building more peaceful, safe, and resilient communities capable of responding to crises.
Hassan Ali Youssef, a researcher and peace specialist, told Mashawir that “integrating protection and psychosocial support into peacebuilding efforts represents an important aspect of responding to the impacts of conflict.”
He noted that “people affected by conflict need safe spaces that can help them regain their ability to cope, communicate, and participate in community life.”
Youssef added that “addressing the impacts of conflict should not be limited to responding to material needs, but should also include psychological and social aspects, while strengthening the role of local communities in protecting groups most at risk and supporting their ability to recover.”
He highlighted “the importance of continuing such activities within educational institutions and local communities, as spaces for awareness-raising, dialogue, and promoting a culture of peace, particularly in environments affected by conflict and crises.”
