The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said that “drone strikes on two warehouses in Sheikan locality, North Kordofan State, on September 20 destroyed more than 292,000 school textbooks, 40,000 revision books in Arabic and mathematics, and other educational materials intended for distribution to children.”
The organization added that “distribution of these materials was scheduled to begin in October, coinciding with the start of the new school year, covering schools in areas west of Bara and Umm Dam. The loss is expected to affect the education of thousands of children.”
UNICEF Representative in Sudan Angela Kearney said that “the destruction of these educational materials represents a setback for children at a time when every effort is being made to return them to classrooms.”
She added: “Many children have already missed years of schooling because of the conflict. With schools already suffering from shortages of teachers, desks, and educational materials, this loss will further undermine children’s opportunities to access quality education.”
