The Darfur Youth Organization (MASHAD) has revealed extremely harsh humanitarian conditions facing residents of Tawila in the northern part of the region, amid severe shortages of basic necessities. Residents are unable to afford even the simplest available goods due to a lack of income sources and soaring food prices.
The organization’s chairman, Ahmed Abdullah, explained that “bread has become unavailable in the town following the closure of bakeries for more than three weeks. This has forced residents to rely on homemade alternatives to stave off hunger. The absence of basic meals and healthcare services has also contributed to the spread of diseases among children, mothers, and older people, particularly malnutrition.”
Tawila, located about 70 kilometers west of El Fasher and under the administration of the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid Mohamed Nour, is one of the main refuges for people fleeing fighting in Darfur and Kordofan. It hosts one of the region’s largest concentrations of displaced people, with their number exceeding 700,000, amid a catastrophic deterioration in humanitarian conditions, declining funding and humanitarian response, and the area’s entry into famine conditions due to severe food shortages and the failure of the agricultural season caused by drought.
Meanwhile, on the occasion of the International Day of Peace on September 21, the Tawila Emergency Response Room continued implementing a communal kitchen project for newly displaced people at Tawila camp, with support from the Tawila and Jebel Marra Emergency Rooms Coordination Council.
The Emergency Response Room appealed to organizations and partners to help bridge the food gap and support displaced families. It also called for intensified efforts by all parties, the international community, and humanitarian organizations to achieve a just and sustainable peace that places people and their dignity at the forefront.
