U.S. Condemns Absence of a “Legitimate” Authority in Sudan

The U.S. Department of State said that the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and their respective leaders do not constitute a legitimate and constitutional government of Sudan, arguing that they exercise power solely through the force of arms.
The statement said that the leaders of the warring factions are therefore not qualified to govern the country, adding that the United States is seeking to help restore peace and return authority to the Sudanese people.
The statement also noted that U.S. President Donald Trump is committed to ending what it described as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, namely the war in Sudan.
It stressed that the United States and its president are prepared to work with any party that is a serious partner in achieving peace in Sudan. It added that Washington would seek to increase the cost of continuing the conflict for all warring parties and the networks supporting and sustaining the war.
The U.S. government has previously described Sudan’s conflict as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis and has called for a political solution rather than a military resolution.
