A delegation of Sudanese civilian forces, led by former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, held a meeting with Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye, the current Chairperson of the African Union, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Ndayishimiye briefed the Sudanese delegation on his efforts to advance the peace process in Sudan, referring to his meetings with delegations representing both the de facto authorities in Port Sudan and the Founding Alliance of Sudan in the Burundian capital, Bujumbura.
He said that both sides had expressed their willingness to accept his efforts to bridge differences between the warring parties.
The Burundian president stressed that “the first step toward achieving peace is a ceasefire and an end to hostilities,” which would create an environment conducive to an inclusive Sudanese dialogue to collectively shape the country’s future and ensure lasting peace and political stability.
For its part, the delegation of Sudanese civilian forces reaffirmed that “there is no military solution to the Sudanese crisis,” noting that Ndayishimiye’s position was consistent with that of the civilian forces regarding the need to end the war and work toward its termination.
The two sides agreed to continue consultations, including a planned visit by a delegation of Sudanese civilian forces to Bujumbura, and to work jointly toward achieving an end to the fighting in Sudan.
