The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has called for an immediate humanitarian truce and cessation of hostilities in Sudan as a step toward a permanent ceasefire.
In a statement, he said the meeting should move “from merely bringing positions closer together to practical and operational coordination.”
He stressed the dangers of the continued war and its growing impact on neighboring countries hosting millions of Sudanese refugees.
Youssouf underscored the need to launch an inclusive, Sudanese-owned and Sudanese-led political process aimed at restoring constitutional order while preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and rejecting any process that could lead to the country’s partition.
He also called for broadening participation in the Sudanese dialogue and ending external military support to the warring parties, stressing that the humanitarian, security, and political tracks should move forward in parallel.
The meeting identified several areas for practical follow-up, including strengthening coordination between the political and security tracks, taking measures to reduce violence and protect civilians, and preparing monitoring and verification mechanisms for the implementation of any agreement reached.
