World Food Programme Provides Humanitarian Assistance to 4.1 Million Sudanese

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced that it provided food and humanitarian assistance to approximately 4.1 million people across Sudan during August 2026, amid continued security and operational challenges and the complexities of the humanitarian situation.

In its latest report, the WFP said that “the assistance included the distribution of approximately 18,200 metric tonnes of food, in addition to cash transfers worth $7.7 million, benefiting around 1.6 million people—the highest level of cash transfers recorded by the programme since the outbreak of the conflict.”

The report noted that Darfur and Kordofan remained the main focus of the humanitarian response, accounting for nearly three-quarters of all beneficiaries during the month. Despite recent attacks and security tensions—including an attack on commercial trucks carrying 50 tonnes of food in Kordofan—the programme continued to adjust its operations to deliver assistance to people displaced by the conflict and those affected by recent flooding.

According to UN estimates, the WFP requires $591 million in funding to cover essential humanitarian operations in Sudan over the next six months, from September 2026 to February 2027, in order to ensure continued support for the most vulnerable populations.
