Malnutrition Claims the Lives of 30 Children in Jebel Marra

Darfur – Mashawir

The General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur Region announced today (Wednesday) that 30 children have died from complications related to malnutrition in the Soni area of eastern Jebel Marra, amid deteriorating health conditions and a lack of medical services.

Adam Rijal said that the Coordination’s latest monitoring recorded more than 100 cases of acute malnutrition among children in Soni, in addition to 30 deaths resulting from complications of malnutrition and the deteriorating health situation.

He explained that the reported figures do not reflect the true scale of the disaster, given the difficulty of determining the number of cases and deaths due to the absence of health centres and health monitoring and reporting systems in the area. This raises the possibility that additional cases remain undocumented or inaccessible.

He noted that the area is facing growing challenges, including drought, declining agricultural production, and scarce food supplies, alongside a significant shortage of humanitarian assistance compared with the growing scale of needs.
