80 Rights Groups Express Concern Over Continued Detention of a Sudanese Journalist

Monitoring - Mashawir

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), alongside 80 other human rights organizations, has expressed grave concern regarding the ongoing detention of Sudanese journalist Moammer Ibrahim by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The coalition is calling for his immediate release and for guarantees regarding his physical safety and protection.

In a joint statement, the CPJ and its partners highlighted serious fears for Ibrahim’s wellbeing. They emphasized the total lack of independent or verifiable information concerning his health, legal status, or the conditions of his confinement. According to the groups, he is largely being held incommunicado, denied any contact with his family or legal counsel.

The statement urged that swift action in this case would help alleviate circulating fears regarding Ibrahim’s health. Furthermore, it called on all parties involved in the Sudanese conflict to respect the work of journalists and stop placing them in danger, stressing that protecting the press is essential for transparency and accountability.

About a month ago, widespread reports surfaced on social media claiming that Moammer Ibrahim had died in detention in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur. However, his family denied those reports at the time.
