The spokesperson for the Preliminary Committee of the Sudan Doctors’ Trade Union has revealed that more than 200 new cases of dengue fever have been recorded in Khartoum State, including 39 deaths.
The spokesperson explained that the most vulnerable groups were at the forefront of the fatalities; the number of deceased women reached 22, in addition to 6 children, amid a severe shortage of basic medical supplies.
Sayed Mohammed pointed out that these statistics do not reflect the true scale of the disaster due to the difficulty of conducting a comprehensive census. He warned of a resurgence in the epidemic curve after a period of decline, resulting from environmental degradation and the absence of preventative measures.
The official spokesperson attributed the worsening situation to administrative negligence and a lack of institutional intervention. Reports have monitored patients crowding inside hospitals, met with an acute shortage of intravenous fluids and life-saving medicines.
