The United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on Monday that more than 3 million displaced Sudanese have returned to their homes, despite the continuation of heavy fighting in some areas of the country.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a devastating war between the Army and the “Rapid Support Forces” (RSF), which has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of people and caused a severe humanitarian crisis.
In a report, the organization estimated that approximately 3.3 million Sudanese had returned to their homes by the end of November 2025.
The number of returnees increased following a large-scale offensive launched by the Army against the RSF in the center of the country in late 2024. This offensive allowed for the regaining of control over Khartoum in March 2025, prompting many families to return.
The IOM stated that more than three-quarters of the returnees are internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Key Statistics by Region:
Khartoum: Recorded the highest number of returnees, totaling approximately 1.4 million people.
Al-Jazirah State: Followed with approximately 1.1 million returnees.
Earlier this month, the military-backed government announced its intention to return to the capital after nearly three years of operating out of the city of Port Sudan.
