The President of the Sovereignty Council and leader of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, held talks on Monday with a British military delegation in the city of Port Sudan. The discussions focused on a ceasefire and issues of mutual interest.

In a statement, the Sovereignty Council said that Al-Burhan “held a meeting with a British delegation headed by Admiral Edward Ahlgren, the British Ministry of Defence’s Senior Military Adviser for the Middle East and North Africa. The delegation also included the Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Richard Crowder, and the British Military Attaché in Cairo.”

The statement noted that the meeting covered the overall developments in Sudan, as well as efforts to achieve peace, security, and stability. Additionally, they reviewed the course of bilateral relations between the two countries and prospects for enhancing them to serve shared interests.

Richard Crowder stated that the British delegation held important talks with the President of the Sovereignty Council regarding the urgent need to reach a ceasefire.

He added that the discussions touched upon the roles of the parties in their commitment to protecting civilians, in accordance with the Jeddah Declaration for the Protection of Civilians signed on May 11, 2023.

He explained that the UK will assume the Presidency of the UN Security Council next month. In April, the UK will co-host a joint conference with Germany in Berlin to support Sudan. Crowder reaffirmed the commitment of the UK government and people to stand by the Sudanese people, utilizing its resources to support Sudan in achieving security, stability, restoring basic services, and driving development and recovery.
