The UN International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated in a report today (Tuesday) that more than 115,000 people were displaced from the Kordofan region between last October and the beginning of this February.
According to the organization’s statement, “the highest number of displaced persons was recorded in North Kordofan State, followed by White Nile State, as well as South Kordofan State.”
According to the United Nations, these massive waves of displacement have increased the risk of famine in North Darfur due to the heavy influx of civilians. This has resulted in the depletion of local communities’ resources and capacities, alongside rising food insecurity and acute malnutrition.
The UN has repeatedly warned of the potential for the “El Fasher scenario” to be repeated in the cities of Kordofan as fighting intensifies.
