The General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in the Darfur region has issued an urgent humanitarian appeal to the international community and humanitarian organizations following a large-scale fire at the Tawila Al-Omda camp in the Tawila area of Darfur.
The Coordination stated that “the fire destroyed hundreds of shelters housing recently displaced families, resulting in significant property losses and the death of a five-year-old child.”
It noted that “the incident has left children, women, and the elderly in the open, without shelter, food, or protection from the bitter night cold.”
The statement added that “this disaster reflects the fragile humanitarian conditions experienced by displaced people in Darfur,” warning that the loss of shelter under such circumstances exposes thousands of lives to the risks of hunger, disease, and cold, and doubles the suffering of communities already exhausted by years of conflict and forced displacement.
The Coordination called for urgent intervention to provide alternative shelter for the affected families, supply food, water, and urgent healthcare, and support the rebuilding of the camp while enhancing its disaster resilience.
