US Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed on Friday the decision to designate the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a foreign terrorist organization, in a step reflecting an escalation in the international stance toward the group and its networks linked to the ongoing war in the country.
The US State Department deposited the decision in the US Federal Register, with it scheduled to enter into force on Monday, March 16.
According to the notice issued by the US State Department, the decision came after a review of the administrative record of the case and in consultation with the Attorney General and the Secretary of the Treasury.
The designation includes what the United States describes as the “Muslim Brotherhood” in Sudan, in addition to several associated names, including the Sudanese Islamic Movement and the Al-Bara bin Malik Battalion, which emerged during the ongoing war in the country.
